Dermal Fillers (Restylane®, RHA® Collection)

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers most commonly are made of hyaluronic acid, a natural substance. Fillers work by providing structural volume and support in areas that may benefit from augmentation. Some common areas include the nasolabial fold, lower eyelid-cheek junction, the cheeks and lips.

Importantly, Botulinum toxin (“Botox”) works through a different mechanism, by modulating nerve and muscle function. While botulinum toxin and fillers are commonly discussed together, they work by different mechanisms and address separate conditions.

Dermal Filler Treatment Options :

Dermal fillers come in a variety of forms. While hyaluronic acid fillers are all made of the same substance, their composition and structure vary significantly allowing different compositions to address different cosmetic concerns. Some common fillers include Restylane, though there are numerous different types of dermal filler products available.

What to Expect With Treatment :

Fillers are typically given in the office setting. Before the treatment, you will often receive a numbing cream or other treatment to minimize discomfort. The filler material will be administered by your physician. The injection of the filler material is done with either a needle or cannula. Immediate side effects include swelling, bruising and redness. While immediate treatment benefits should be seen, there continues to be additional augmentation in the first few days after injection. Treatment typically lasts for at least one year, though this varies by patient.
